Credit Courses
IS THERE A COST FOR HIGH SCHOOL CREDIT COURSES?
There is a $30.00 fee for high school students who are residents of Ontario. The purchase of textbooks may be required at a nominal cost.
WHAT AGE DO I NEED TO BE TO SIGN UP FOR A CLASS?
High school students (13 years old by December 31 to 18 years) may register for a credit course. Adults may register for a credit course depending on availability of adult classes or on a case-by-case basis. High school credit courses or interest courses for adults are usually taught for 3¼ hours per week amounting to 110 hours per credit earned.
IS IT TOO LATE TO REGISTER TODAY?
High school credit course registration takes place in September for full-year courses and at specific points during the year for special, accelerated or hybrid courses. Students should consult their high school guidance department to plan their academic schedule for the following year.
WHEN AND WHERE ARE THE CLASSES HELD?
High school credit courses or interest courses for adults in Kingston are usually taught at Limestone Community Education (164 Van Order Drive, Kingston, ON) for 3 hours per week. Credit course class time amounts to 110 hours per credit earned.
DO I NEED TO KNOW THE LANGUAGE BEFORE REGISTERING?
No. Students are welcome to learn a completely new language previously unknown to them, to begin learning their heritage language, or to perfect their home language if they’re already speakers of the language. As much as possible, credit course teachers strive to meet the needs of each student, whether or not the student has had previous exposure to the language.
HOW DO I KNOW WHAT MY CHILD IS BEING TAUGHT IN CLASS?
Each language teacher has a Plan of Study for parents to review.
The program is based on and supported by the Ministry of Education of Ontario’s
Curriculum for international languages.
WILL THE CULTURAL COMPONENT OF THE PROGRAM INCLUDE RELIGIOUS
EDUCATION?
No. ILP classes are strictly language classes with a cultural component that helps the
students understand the cultural context(s) related to the language, but not with any religious rituals, dogmas, rules, or course content based on the practice of a religion.
